Services We Offer
Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP)
ANPs are highly qualified clinicians who have undergone significant education and training and come with vast clinical skills.
The role commands specific expert knowledge base and clinical competences to be able to make complex clinical decisions with patients presenting with a variety of illnesses.
They provide acute and urgent care to patients presenting to GP practice requiring on the day/urgent assessment.
ANPS will be the first point of contact for patients and can be directed from the reception team through straightforward signposting processes. Patients do not require to be seen by GPs before seeing the ANP.
The valuable role of ANPs acts to compliment, but not replace the role of the GPs. GP’s remain the most appropriate clinician to manage complex, undifferentiated illness.
Our urgent care practitioners can assess, diagnose, prescribe and manage a number of conditions within primary care:
Some examples of conditions they can assess are: skin issues, chest infections, exacerbation of asthma, abdominal pain, urinary tract infections, sore throats, back pain & headaches
They can refer patients to FVRH to be seen acutely by the medical / surgical/paediatric teams and organise referrals to specialists to be seen in outpatient clinics
Refer patients to the appropriate specialist if there is any suspicion of cancer via the Scottish Referral Guidelines for Suspected Cancer.
Order blood tests, x-rays and scans
ANPs can issue patients with a sick line (fit note) if required.
They do not provide chronic disease management reviews such as Asthma Review, Diabetes. Fully qualified ANPs alongside the GP practice are involved in the training of trainee ANPs throughout FV. You may be seen and assessed by a trainee.
Advanced Physio Practitioner (APP)
The Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner (APP) based within this Practice provides a first contact service for patients aged 16 and over with any musculoskeletal (MSK) problem. Patients do not need to be seen by a doctor first and can make an appointment directly with the APP via Reception at the Practice. The APP Service does have a limited capacity making it unable to see all patients with MSK problems so you may still be offered an appointment with your GP or Practice Nurse.
An APP works independently to assess and diagnose MSK problems and will form personalised management plans to address appropriate patient goals. An APP will liaise with other colleagues within the practice when necessary.
The APP can request further investigations such as diagnostic imaging and bloods to aid diagnosis when appropriate. They can refer to secondary care services e.g., Orthopaedics, Neurology, Rheumatology, Pain Management, if required. Those patients who require more involved input for their MSK condition will be referred to the core MSK Physiotherapy Service, as they would if seen by any other member of the Practice team.
Most APPs are trained in injection therapy. A growing number are also independent prescribers. All APPs can issue fit notes, but only for MSK conditions they have assessed.
To make an appointment please contact Reception and ask for an APP appointment.
In this Practice, the APP is available on: Tuesdays and Fridays

Practice Pharmacy Team
GP Practices in Forth Valley now have access to a General Practice Pharmacy Team provided by the Health Board. This team, comprising Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, and Pharmacy Support Workers, plays a vital role in patient care and helps to support the Practices with many key tasks regarding medicines and their use.
Our General Practice Pharmacy Team is dedicated to improving the wellbeing of patients throughout the community working closely with the GPs, nurses and reception teams. They focus on ensuring the safe and effective use of medications, including medicines and items for individuals in care homes and those receiving care at home, and help with the processing of prescriptions.
It's important to note that this practice-based team is different from your local Community Pharmacy Team. Community Pharmacies offer services such as treating common clinical conditions through the Pharmacy First Service, smoking cessation support, and the provision of emergency hormonal contraception. They are also the places where you can have your prescription medications dispensed.
In addition to helping with the issuing of prescriptions, the General Practice Pharmacy Team may contact you by telephone when you have been discharged from hospital to check you understand what medication you should be taking. The team may also contact you to review your current medication.
If you have any queries regarding your medication, please ask to speak to a member of our General Practice Pharmacy team. If you have any queries regarding when your prescription will be ready for collection, please contact the Community Pharmacy.
Family / General Services
Family Planning
Family Planning advice and pre-pregnancy counselling is available from any Doctor. Contraceptive Implants can be arranged via Dr Wood.
The Practice Nurse performs smears, depo-provera injections and routine contraceptive pill checks.
Ante Natal
Pregnant patients are cared for routinely within the Health Centre by the visiting Larch Team of midwives from Forth Valley Royal Infirmary as part of a shared care plan with the practice. Six weeks post natal the patient is advised to attend for a routine check by a doctor.
Baby Clinic
Appointments are currently being run in alignment with the day of the baby's immunisations to reduce the number of visits having to be made to the practice.
We will send out a letter to the parents to ask that you contact us when your immunisation appointment has been received and we will try our best to align your appointments.
Chronic Disease Management Clinics
These are run by the practice nurses with the assistance of our healthcare assistant. They cover chronic diseases which require regular monitoring such as diabetes, asthma and respiratory problems, heart problems, high blood pressure and thyroid disorders.
Patients are contacted at regular intervals (usually yearly in the month of birth) by text and invited to attend for a review of their condition. For example, those with diabetes will first attend the healthcare assistant to have bloods and a basic health check and then be seen by a practice nurse two weeks later for the results.
Practice Nurse
Our Practice Nurses, Jo and Heather, see people of all ages and have a varied role. They support patients in managing a range of long term conditions such as asthma, diabetes and high blood pressure. They also carry out cervical screening, give advice on sexual health, contraception and hormone replacement therapy.
Stop Smoking
Support clinics, including advice about smoking cessation products are available in the area. Call 01786 433293 or 07989155106 to find out more.
Your local pharmacy also runs a smoking cessation service and can provide the full range of options.
Smoking cessation products are not available from your GP.
Joint Injections
Steroid injections for the treatment of inflammatory joint conditions can be arranged where necessary with Dr Herron or our Advanced Physio Practitioner if practicable. We recommend that you contact the surgery if considering this service for the first time to discuss your individual needs.
Other Services
The nurses, healthcare assistant, health visitors and district nurses all help run various clinics with the district nurses working mainly out in the community. There is also access to a phlebotomist and midwife, along with a treatment room, chiropody and physiotherapy department.
Meadowbank Health Centre also has its own pharmacy on site.
